How to run Android apps on Windows: a detailed guide

With the advancement of technology, military units increasingly use specialized software solutions to enhance operational efficiency.
Popular mobile applications such as Ukrop, Kropyva, Combat Vision, MilChat, Dzhura, as well as Delta, Armor, Mapa, ePPO, assist in operational management, communication, and navigation. They are widely used in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as among volunteer and command structures that ensure rapid information gathering and processing.

Most of these programs are developed for Android, which creates certain difficulties when using them on Windows devices since they are not natively supported without additional tools. For military personnel using special-purpose interactive tables, tactical laptops, command tablets, server stations, and other devices, it is crucial to enable the installation and use of such applications. This allows for the effective integration of mobile solutions into military infrastructure, improving operational management, data transmission, and battle coordination.

In this guide, we will explore how to install these applications on Windows to ensure their stable operation and maximum efficiency in military conditions.

Methods for Installing Android Apps on Windows

As of today, there are several proven ways to run Android applications on Windows:

  1. Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) – an official solution from Microsoft (support ends in 2025).
  2. Android emulators – programs that allow running mobile applications on a PC.
  3. APK sideloading – installing applications directly from APK files.

Let’s take a closer look at each of these methods.

1. Using Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA)

WSA is an official technology from Microsoft that allows running Android applications directly on Windows.

Installing Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) and Amazon Appstore

1. Ensure your computer supports Windows 11.

  • Open Settings > System > About to check your Windows version.

2. Download and install Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA)

  • Open the Microsoft Store and search for Windows Subsystem for Android.
  • Click Install and wait for the process to complete.

3. Install Amazon Appstore

  • In the Microsoft Store, search for Amazon Appstore.
  • Install the app and log into your Amazon account.

4. Launch Windows Subsystem for Android

  • Open Start > Windows Subsystem for Android Settings.
  • Find the Developer Mode option and enable it (toggle to On).
  • Open Amazon Appstore, log in, and install the necessary applications.

NOTE: WSA support ends in 2025, so consider alternative methods.

2. Using Android Emulators

One of the most convenient ways to run Android applications on Windows is through emulators. They create a virtual Android environment for running applications.

Popular emulators:

  1. BlueStacks – the most popular Android emulator with Google Play Store support.
  2. NoxPlayer – optimized for performance, suitable for low-end PCs.
  3. LDPlayer – a great option for running specialized applications.

How to Install Applications via BlueStacks:

  1. Download BlueStacks from the official website.
  2. Install the emulator and log into Google Play Store.
  3. Find and install the desired application.
  4. If the application is unavailable in the Play Store, use an APK file.

NOTE: Emulators consume significant resources, so a PC with at least 8GB of RAM is recommended.

3. Installing Android Applications via APK Files

If the required application is unavailable in Amazon Appstore, it can be installed manually:

1. Download and set up ADB (Android Debug Bridge)

  • Download Android SDK Platform Tools from the official Google website. Choose the appropriate version for your operating system.
  • Extract the archive and open a command prompt in this folder (Shift + Right-click > Open Command Prompt here).

2. Start WSA and Connect to ADB

  • Open Windows Subsystem for Android Settings.
  • Copy the IP address displayed in the Developer Mode section.
  • Enter the following command in the command prompt: adb connect .

3. Install APK

  • Enter the following command in the command prompt: adb install .
  • Once installation is complete, the application will appear in the Start menu.

NOTE: Be cautious when downloading APK files to avoid potential security threats.

Summary and Recommendations

The ability to run Android applications on Windows provides military and specialized units with access to critical software such as Ukrop, Kropyva, Combat Vision, MilChat, Dzhura, Delta, Armor, Mapa, ePPO. This enhances mobility, information exchange speed, and operational management efficiency. Given the end of WSA support in 2025, it is advisable to explore alternative methods for integrating Android applications on Windows devices in advance.

  • WSA (until March 2025) – the most convenient official method.
  • Emulators (BlueStacks, NoxPlayer) – an effective solution for most PCs.
  • APK sideloading – a solution for apps not available in the Play Store.

The choice of method depends on hardware capabilities and specific tasks. WSA remains a convenient solution for now, but for the future, consider emulators or manual APK installation. Use the method that ensures stable and secure operation of critical applications in field and command conditions.
